Please join us for dim sum and a thought-provoking discussion on the parallels between the 19th Century industrial revolution and today's technological revolution. Dr. Tiffany is one of Wharton's most riveting and compelling speakers with tremendous insight and a rich historical perspective. You will not want to miss this event!

The late 19th Century was called "The Era of Creative Destruction" by Joseph Schumpeter, an economist who was enamored of the changes wrought in the American economy through the efforts of a new breed of entrepreneurs. What these individuals accomplished was a fundamental restructuring of how America worked; in so doing they destroyed industries, firms, and careers--but replaced them with new business methods that created greater value than had existed in the past. The result, at the turn of the century, was the single most powerful industrial economy in the history of the world.

We are in the midst of witnessing a second era of "creative destruction", led by the same forces that Schumpeter chronicled: technological change and entrepreneurship. The result, as before, is a vastly restructured economy that has catapulted America to a position of unparalled strength today.

However...the question of the day is "What's next?" Where will this lead? Dr. Tiffany will compare the two eras and point to some troubling similarities in terms of outcomes. Our future, he will note, could potentially be substantially different from the positive scenario that seems so assured at this point in time.
